The Russell Brown@MAX lab is a three-day, hands-on course designed for art directors, designers, illustrators, and photographers to learn advanced imaging and publishing tips and techniques to use with Adobe® Photoshop® CS5.1 and Adobe InDesign® CS5.5. Led by Adobe Senior Creative Director Russell Brown and his distinguished team of instructors, the course gives you the opportunity to work with some of the best designers and instructors in the industry.
In this class — using a powerful combination of cameras, computers, and Adobe Creative Suite® 5.5 software — you will construct several amazing creations of both a physical and digital nature. Start with cutting edge photography by Joel Grimes, add a pinch of advanced Photoshop techniques, and you'll soon have a collection of amazing images for your Alice in Wonderland-inspired project. Then, through technical trickery and down-to-earth instruction from InDesign experts David Blatner and James Fritz, you'll learn to publish anywhere, from teapot to tablet!
Taught on the latest Mac computers, Russell Brown@MAX features a limited class size and an intimate, inspiring environment for in-depth instruction on the Adobe Creative Suite of products. While working on your digital publishing project, you'll have time to ask questions of industry experts and network with others in your field. This year's theme is Alice in Wonderland and, as in the past, you should be prepared for Russell Brown to act as mad as a hatter.

Day 1 — In the first day of class we will start the day off with a demonstration from Joel Grimes on some of his photography and lighting techniques. Joel will then capture images of all the Alice in Wonderland characters in the studio. After the photography session is complete, Joel and Russell will demonstrate their favorite techniques for masking, compositing and enhancing images. Students will be able to use some of the images photographed by Joel, or to shoot images of their own. Use of Joel's images is restricted to the RussellBrown@MAX projects and may not be used by attendees in any other manner outside of the class. This class is all about advanced Photoshop imaging techniques and photography that can be used on our ceramics projects and in our digital publications and will focus on giving images a unique mood and character that is so essential to making a compelling image.
Day 2 — Using designs and photos captured in class or that you bring with you we will use Adobe InDesign to create three different (and amazing!) tablet-ready versions of your book: ePub, Interactive PDF, and Folio (Adobe Digital Publishing Suite). Using our professionally designed templates, you'll learn the step-by-step process of creating these three files, and then transferring them to your favorite tablet device.
A good working knowledge of Adobe Photoshop is required for this class. Some working knowledge of Adobe InDesign would also be helpful. With the help of one of our sponsors, you'll have access to a large library of images from iStockPhoto.com. You can bring your own camera, but you are welcome to use the images taken by our professional studio photographer Joel Grimes. During the photography sessions, we will have professional models dressed as characters from Alice in Wonderland who will be photographed by the amazing Joel Grimes as he plays with light as if he were Rembrandt. Even better: Bring your own costume and let Joel photograph you for your project!
Finally, in the spirit of the Mad Hatter's tea party, you will print your class images on a special decal material and transfer them onto your very own ceramic teapot. The results will be fired in a kiln and returned to class. Now that's extreme printing!
If you have a tablet, you should bring it with you, but everything you need for the class, from the Mac computer to the Wonderland models, will be supplied. Just bring your creativity and enthusiasm!
